14 brilliant things to do in Shanghai this week

It's still hot and we don't think that's gonna be changing anytime soon. Luckily, Shanghai is still awesome, and that won't be changing anytime soon either. There are loads of ways to enjoy the summer without overheating (63 to be exact) and, if all else is lost, cool off with one of these fabulous frozen drinks. BREW Beer Fest

BREW Beer Fest is back for its eighth year. Expect to see the likes of The BREW, Goose Island, Boxing Cat, Little Creatures, and Kaiba, while there will also be food from Big Bamboo, The COOK, Brothers Kebab and more.

Sweet Summer Sweat Fest

Spectacles of Sound present a clutch of Malaysian artists currently at the forefront of their country's alternative music scene with rapper Airliftz, electronic producer alextbh and rapper/singer-songwriter Zamaera.

James Carter Trio 

Detroit-born saxophonist James Carter – cousin of Regina – brings his vibrant jazz sounds to Shanghai, with a modern take that still pays its dues to the storied history of the genre.

While She Sleeps

Having last visited in 2015, English metalcore outfit While She Sleeps return to Shanghai with a show at MAO Livehouse. They're undertaking an extensive China and Asia tour to promote new album You Are We.

Friday Rock

VOID 10 Years Series: Albert Van Abbe

One of Shanghai's best nightlife collectives mark a decade in the game with Dutch techno producer Albert Van Abbe, a regular at some of Europe's biggest festivals and clubs, including Awakenings and Berghain. This one will be taking place in a secret location, to be revealed a few days before.

Leonce

Cloud presents Atlanta producer and Fade to Mind signee Leonce for a night of dark, driving club music. Faded Ghost, Howell and Swimful provide excellent support.

Techno Femme

TOP 5 Opening Party x Unravel

Top 5 and Unravel are teaming up for the pop art poster show launch party for a night of art, stories, food, drink and fun. The unique posters will be on display (and on sale) for the first time, and Unravel storytellers will recount authentic, unscripted stories from their real lives inspired.

Shanghai Urban Aesthetics Fair

Woodstock of Eating has teamed up with M50 for Shanghai Urban Aesthetics Fair, a three-day festival that will unfold across the art district next to Suzhou River, pulling together a number of creatives from multiple cities across China. The feel-good festival's varied line-up includes art exhibitions, live music from bands and DJs, street-food vendors, a farmers' market, craft and designer stalls, body painting, Time Out Film screenings and more.

Jekyll and Hyde

There are few more famous duos than Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, even if they were two halves of the same person. Even those unfamiliar with Robert Louis Stevenson will affix a Jekyll-and-Hyde label on a mercurial personality. But Stevenson’s 1886 gothic novella captured our collective imagination – after all, who really knows the stranger that lurks inside us all? (Performed in Mandarin only).
